Understanding the Parts of a Prosthesis
A prosthesis is a custom-made device designed to replace a missing or damaged limb or body part. It’s composed of several key components that work together to provide mobility, functionality, and comfort.
The 4 Main Parts of a Prosthesis
1. Interface: The interface is the part of the prosthesis that attaches to the residual limb (stump). It’s typically made of thin, cushioned materials that protect the skin and distribute pressure evenly. Gel cushion interfaces are commonly used, and some people may use prosthetic socks for added comfort.
2. Suspension: The suspension system helps keep the prosthesis securely attached to the residual limb. Common suspension systems include:
– Vacuum suspension: uses an electric or mechanical pump to remove air from the socket
– Passive suction: creates a seal over the joint by forcing air out of the gap
– Interface locking: uses a stainless steel pin to secure the interface
– Anatomical suspension: uses the natural contours of the body to hold the socket in place
3. Structural Components: These components provide the framework for the prosthesis. They include:
– Socket: the plastic receptacle attached to the residual limb
– Appendage: the limb to which the prosthesis is attached
– Joint: the connecting module that links the appendage to the socket
– Microprocessor-controlled components: these advanced components provide greater stability and safety for lower limb prostheses
4. Appearance or Cover: Some people choose to add a soft foam cover to their prosthesis to give it a more natural appearance. This cover can also help reduce damage to clothing.
Advanced Prosthetic Components
Modern prosthetics often feature advanced components, such as:
– Myoelectric upper limb prostheses: use natural electric signals from the muscles to control the prosthesis
– Microprocessor-controlled ankles and knees: provide greater stability and safety for lower limb prostheses
